Are you a sucker for a good love story but want to avoid risque novels?
I'm a sucker for a good, clean love story.
Want to know how to find them?
Those of us who love Jane Austen are already enjoying clean and sweet romance stories. They've been around for hundreds of years. But we want more! We want new, clean fresh stories.
In 2012 Shadow Mountain Publishing announced a new trend for romance novels called Proper Romance. They define proper romance as stories that are uplifting and clean. That means, there's no sex, violence, foul language, or cheating in the novels. (A little kissing is allowed).
Most romance novels (in all sub-genres) are filled with sex scenes and foul language (I don't know about you, but it takes me right out of the story!). 😢
Although readers like us are not the NORM, there are still a lot of people who are looking for good old-fashioned pure and clean romance stories for themselves and their teens.
One thing to note is that clean or sweet fiction isn't necessarily religious. There is a whole separate genre for Christian literature and these freely mention God and Jesus with the intent of strengthening faith.
If Christian fiction isn't your thing but you still love clean fiction for personal reasons then Proper Romance, Proper Historical Fiction, Sweet Romance and Clean Romance are the genres you are looking for!

If you'd like to read a proper romance novel...here's a list at Goodreads that has over 650 titles to choose from! Amazon has a long list as well.
If you don't understand why risque novels are unhealthy for you check out this article from the New Yorker: Bad Romance? Are romance novels porn for women? They make a good argument.
Some day I will write my OWN proper romance novel (it's in the works) and I hope that many of you will read it and let me know what you think. 😊
